Captain B. F. Taylor's Company M. 3rd Arkansas Cavalry (Union). Benjamin Franklin Taylor was a Peace Society man but evaded capture when they were rounded up in November 1861. He formed a band of Unionists in the fall of 1862 and contested Confederate General Marmaduke's crossing of the Buffalo River January 2, 1863. There were about 40 men scattered and Taylor went to Fayetteville where he enlisted 27 February 1863 in Company K. 1st. Arkansas Cavalry and raised Company M. This Company was mustered in February 10, 1864 for three years and was mustered out 30 June 1865. Some men had enlisted for one year, and brought action to be discharged sooner. Some of these men may have been members of Major J. W. S. Leslie's Confederate battalion who deserted en masse to join the Union Army.
